I can’t remember a Thanksgiving or Christmas that did not include Green Bean Casserole. Of course, growing up in the ’80’s, it was always made with Cream of Chemical Soup and mushy canned green beans. Still, it was always one of my favorites and took up a good bit of real estate on my plate.

I’ve updated the classic with some Trader Joe’s items that make it so much more delicious. This recipe uses Trader Joe’s Condensed Cream of Portabella Soup, Gourmet Fried Onion Pieces, and French Green Beans and which give it a gourmet-level flavor.

And like all Trader Joe’s products, these do not have artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Without that chemical tang, everyone will think you made this casserole from scratch!

Green Bean Casserole

What You’ll Need to Make Green Bean Casserole

  • 1 Bag of frozen French green beans
  • 1 Container of Cream of Portabella Mushroom Soup
  • 1 Container of Gourmet Fried Onion Pieces
  • Soy sauce
  • Milk
  • Shredded Swiss cheese (optional, but delicious)
  • 1.5 Quart Casserole or Baking Dish

Tips

  • If you don’t mind an extra step, cutting the green beans in half will make it easier for children to eat this recipe.
  • If you don’t mind the taste of mushrooms, but hate the texture, you can push the Cream of Portabella Mushroom soup through a sieve to remove all of the mushroom bits.
  • The Swiss cheese is completely optional, but it gives this casserole a depth of flavor that I think you’ll love.
