You can make sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot quickly and easily. Ready in less time than if you bake them, these sweet potatoes turn out silky and perfectly cooked every time.
Jump to RecipeI will always find it hard to believe that there are people in this world who don’t like sweet potatoes. We have them at least once a week, and sweet potato casserole has always been one of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
The only downside of sweet pototoes is how long they take to cook. A good sized one can take over an hour to bake in the oven. And, sure, you could cook them in a microwave, but by the time the middle is done, the ends are hard and dried out.
I have found the quickest and easiest way to cook sweet potatoes is in an Instant Pot. In 20 minutes, you can have perfectly cooked, silky-smooth sweet potatoes that you can eat as-is or use in another recipe.

What You’ll Need for Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes
- Sweet Potatoes
- Instant Pot
- Metal or Silicone Trivet
- Water
Tips
- I have the 6 quart Instant Pot Duo. If you have a different size Instant Pot or a different brand electric pressure cooker, your cooking times may be different.
- I generally buy the largest sweet potatoes I can find. The size in the images for this post took 18 minutes. If you have small sweet potatoes, try 15 minutes; if yours are bigger than mine, try 20 minutes.
- Cooked sweet potatoes will last 1 week in the fridge.
Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes
Equipment
- Instant Pot
- Metal or Silicone Trivet
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 – 6 Medium Sweet Potatoes, Scrubbed and Rinsed
Instructions
- Add 1 cup of water to the inner pot insert of an Instant Pot. Place metal or silicone trivet in the water.
- Place the sweet potatoes on the trivet and close the lid of the Instant Pot. Turn the steam release valve to "sealing". Press the "Pressure Cook" button and adjust the cooking time to 15 – 20 minutes.
- After the potatoes are finished cooking, leave the steam release valve sealed and allow the pressure to release naturally until the float valve falls. This will take about 10 – 15 minutes.
- Once the float valve falls, open the lid and serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
