Trader Joe’s new Spicy Chakri Mix is an intriguing mix of crunchy pieces and Indian-inspired seasonings. Read on to see if you should buy a bag.
I love my snacks and I love Indian food, so I was very intrigued when I saw Trader Joe’s new Spicy Chakri Mix on the shelf.
According to the description on the back of the bag, Chakri are rice-flour-based snacks common to India. Trader Joe’s has also added other rice- and chickpea-based bits along with Indian-inspired spices to create this addictive snack mix.

Some Indian snack mixes can be very spicy, but I found this mix to be pretty mild.
My only complaint is that there were only 3 or 4 peanuts in my bag – not nearly the amount in the picture. I didn’t miss them that much since the mix was so flavorful, but peanut lovers might be disappointed if their bag turns out like mine.
I’ve seen some folks say that the different bits are so small it felt awkward to eat the snack mix with their fingers. I didn’t have that problem, but using a spoon seems to help.
Nutrition Information for Trader Joe’s Spicy Chakri Mix

Nothing too shocking here given this snack mix is made up of deep-fried starches. The sodium is a little on the high side, so if that’s an issue for you, you might want to avoid this product.
A serving is a satisfying 1/3 cup, with 8 servings in the whole package.

This product is not labelled gluten-free, though wheat is not listed in the ingredients. I would assume the natural flavor is the culprit, but there’s no way to know. If you have celiac disease or a severe sensitivity, this is not the snack for you.
The Chakri Snack Mix does contain dairy and peanuts, so if you have an issue with either of those ingredients, beware.
Like all Trader Joe’s products, this mix does not contain artificial flavors, preservatives, or colorings.
Verdict: 9/10
Overall, I enjoyed Trader Joe’s new (slightly) Spicy Chakri Mix. I was just the right amount of crunchiness and the flavor was very good. I only deducted a point due to the small number of peanuts. If my next bag is better, I’ll change my rating.

They taste amazing but I did have a reaction from eating them. I’m guessing there is a hidden gluten ingredient in the mix
Good to know! And sorry you had a reaction. It can be a gamble, right?
I really did not like it…i love indian flavors in my food but after the first bite it was a bit monotone. Also very greasy if you use your hands, which i feel is the point of snack foods. Finally, the pieces are so small (size of rice cereal or smaller) and the longer fried pieces are all shattered. I used it on top of rice as flavoring but as a snack it does not get my vote. As for the gluten comment, i was ok as a gluten sensitive person but would not trust it for my son who has celiac disease. It is not a trader joes “gluten free” safe product.
I love the crunch, the flavors. Don’t like peanuts l pick them out. Would prefer peas in place if peanuts. A variety of choices would be nice.
I am a big fan and have enjoyed this product for years.
I wondered why it was not labelled “gluten free,” and would NEVER have guessed that the “natural flavor” in the butter was the culprit.
